Please edit this description, because the most important aspect is missing: each state gets a number based upon population PLUS two for their senators; therefore, a state with a small population automatically has more power per capita than a densely populated state. One vote in a place like Iowa is worth 15 votes in California. It's a system meant to favor the agricultural slave states over the then densely populated NE states - that and counting each enslaved person as 3/5 of a vote - convinced them to join the Union. It's an archaic system that must be abandoned.
each enslaved person was 3/5 of a vote. That actually meant the southern states had less power than if each enslaved person was counted as a full person.
Thanks for the fraction correction, but I only included that fact to show how the Northeaster representatives padded things to convince the Southern states to join. It went away with the Amendments that followed the Civil War and the Black population became second class citizens. What remained until today is including the two senators for each state in the count and that slants the total in favor of low population states over densely populated states. Right now, California has 52 votes representing 760K+ each, whereas the lowest population states such as Alaska and Wyoming have fewer than 760K people altogether but still get 2 for their senators and 1 for their representatives. You do the math to figure out how more their votes count than California's.
And when the Electoral College was created in most states only white men could vote and men with property didn’t trust the rest. Often the property was slaves.
Don't forget the 3/5ths rule - both the EC and the Senate malconstruction handed outsized power to the slavists. The 'small states' thing is more of a lost cause myth.
It's incredible that a single presidency unraveled the concept of a free & legal election process.
I never thought a single person could do such harm to the fabric of America. Yesterday, I read a reliable source article that a segment of US society is prepping for civil war. I remember this idea being floated before, but not with the idea that DJT was somehow gypped out of his presidency without a shred of proof! 🤦🏼♀️
Believe it or not, even though I voted for Harris, I still think that the electoral college is a good idea. Arrogant coastal elites either need to stop disparaging conservatives or their arrogance needs to be checked by the electoral college and by a Senate that gives disproportionate power to the smaller states.
There are a few people who live on the coasts who act like they can understand the thinking of non-coastal Americans. Apparently, Trump is one of them.
In 2000 when George W Bush was handed the election after the Florida recount was halted, the terrible precedent was set. Donald Trump is the inheritor of the fallout from that travesty.
I'm a left coaster. I don't feel special about anything political. Living on the coast just means you can drive to the ocean faster than some. It's really not a big deal.
Michael, I would like to purchase 4. How do you wish to be paid? Credit Card or Cash? I can also send you , a mailing envelope...when the strike is over. Thank you.

Yeah, maybe it's time to change this to prevent malevolent minority control of the Senate.

Yes I read that too.

Wasn’t Trump an arrogant coastal elite member when the Electoral College established him as President in 2016?

Anyway, I love your cartoon.
