You both give legs to the realization I first read in The Mature Mind by Harry A Overstreet that "...unless we gain empathy for others as we grow older we'll just end up being big kids with a lot of power".
I have never heard of the expression “everybody and his monkey”. I’d always heard “everybody and his dog”. Regardless, it did not occur to me to see the monkey drawing as a slur on black people. Glad you were able to have a conversation that resolved the misunderstanding.
Decades ago, in 1983, Howard Cosell got in big trouble because he burst out during a football game saying, “Boy, watch that little monkey go,” describing a black ball carrier heading toward the end zone. Cosell was fired from his job as a commentator on Monday Night Football, and the uproar went on for weeks. This phrase was well known in the US in past times and has been suppressed, so younger people may not be aware of it. The US used to have a rich assortment of disparaging exonyms, names given by outsiders to inferior groups. Another one for black people was coons.
Both you and Daryl were willing to meet, listen and open yourselves to each other. Powerful. It says a lot about your characters. May your friendship grow.
I love when people can talk about topics that initially create divide when they can clearly be a stepping stone to friendship. We all have a story but are more similar than anything.

How about not my monkey, not my circus.... Wendy.
I'm impressed with how you got right to the core. Was so open. Very powerful.

Great interview segment! So glad you and Darryl got together and talked it out.
I didn't see the racism until it was pointed out and I have lived with racism my entire adult life. It's certainly in the eye of the beholder.
Excellent that you could say an idiot defended it even after people you know told you it was not okay. You obviously are not a racist.
Glad you two could talk it out. That's not as common as it should be.
The cartoon is offensive!
We're about to find out what a real deep state is like, and it's not good!!!
