“There are but two parties now: traitors and patriots,” Colonel Ulysses S. Grant wrote in a letter to his father in 1861. “ I want hereafter to be ranked with the latter and, I trust, the stronger party.”

As President Grant neared the end of his second term in 1875, the first centennial of the Declaration of Independence approached. Grant predicted that the next civil war would be "between patriotism and intelligence on one side, and superstition, ambition, and ignorance on the other.”

Great job of digging up this historic quote.

Did you notice that the two folks killed in Minneapolis are named Alex Pretti and Renee Good...Pretty Good..? and their actions showed them to be patriots in the moment of their death. Posterity will record this as the moment with their names, too.

Al Gorythm's avatar

Yes! Absolutely agree with you on that point.

leslyefeb's avatar

That feel signifiant somehow.

Catherine Hollingsworth's avatar

to the first comment about patriotism and traitors, yes...

Wow! Grant nailed it.

I follow Substacker Donald C Cartmell who posts ‘This week in the Civil War.’ I stare at the images and narratives, hoping Lincoln or Grant will somehow speak to us in 2026. So, thank you for sharing Grant’s words!

You’re welcome!

I’ll leave you with these words of wisdom also from Grant but could have also come from AB about the current occupant of the Oval Office: “Cheap cigars come in handy; they stifle the odor of cheap politicians.“

Great cartoon.

For some reason this popped in head. The commercial where Kristi Noem asks people to self-deport and get paid to with the promise of getting to come back legally.... WOW, that last part is pure fiction... and why not at the end "I'm Stephen Miller and I approve this message."

Too painfully true

May the farce be with you, Starship Pooper.

This is a perfectly apt representation. Amazing, as always.

Cue up Spring Time for Hitler and Germany from Mel Brooks’ “The Producers”

Lol, exactly what I was thinking of.

Bovino already has the winter authoritarian wardrobe straight out of central casting…

or Wag the Dog...that film is so apt right now!

And I can hear Darth Vader's voice emanating, with the millennium storm troopers (AKA ICE) swearing allegiance to their benefactor!

Every news day, a new insult to Americans everywhere! ?🔥❌️

Al Gorythm's avatar

I’m so sick and tired of waking up to “Breaking News” and the agonizing thought of what has he broken now?

Tracy Kohlbeck's avatar

I read someone's comment referring to it as actually the 'Bored of Peace'. Seemed apt.

Cheryl Fleming's avatar

On point. Darth Vader indeed.

Al Gorythm's avatar

Trump thinks of himself more as Darth Invader but looks more like Girth Invader.

I get where you were going, HOWEVER, at the end, Darth Vader felt compassion and redeemed himself. After passing, he appeared with obi-wan, another deceased Jedi Master, indicating he had a conscience AND a soul, both which are lacking in the red tie. I would compare him to the emperor. No conscience or soul there.

With malice toward all, with charity for none.

Michael, you drew a documentary! Bravo 😪

Rosa Maria's avatar

Even Darth Vader had some sense of honour.

Sharon Heitzman's avatar

Perfect! Minnesota has definitely been invaded by the Clone Army.

MM's avatar

Meh. The clones had a better costume designer. 😶

History never dies, although some might try to erase it. Bravo Michael. I wonder who Darth is under the cloak. Epstein, Epstein, Epstein.

Duke Taylor's avatar

With Trump it might be more accurate to call it “Bored of Peace” as he more an agent of chaos

Can the would be dictator be stopped? Hell Yes! Can the Grifter extraordinaire be stopped before lose all creditability on the world stage? How many innocent people have to die because on him? The mid terms can't come fast enough so we can impeach him & send him to jail where he belongs.

Gloria's avatar

You’re really counting on an election aren’t you?

Wayne's avatar

I see an impeachment that will put an end to the MAGA movement. As the Blue Wave swamps Congress, we will stop them once & for all. Rebuilding our once great country will take years.
