Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.
Perfect. Out with the light. What possessed this billionaire to embrace Trump and ruin a once independent and respected newspaper is beyond understanding. I unsubscribed to WAPO when they failed to endorse Kamala, many talented artists and writers jumped ship, and the paper has steadily deteriorated ever since.
I always thought, and still do, that the motto of the Post - Democracy dies in Darkness - was brilliant for a news paper. I thought it stood akin to the NYT - All the news that’s fit to print. Turns out, unfortunately, that I was very wrong. What a shame.
Democracy dies in darkness is so appropriate and I appreciate you creating this to mark it. To think of where the WAPO was years ago, saving my country, and now it's a member of the class helping to destroy it.
Yesterday's article in The Atlantic, by Ashley Parker (formerly senior national political correspondent for The Washington Post) was aptly titled "The Murder of The Washington Post."
That's what it feels like Bezos is systematically doing, and it's both crushing and heartbreaking.
It's long overdue--time to cancel our WaPo subscription.
As a former reporter who worked with Post reporters in my formative years, this hurts. They were, and I'm sure still are, hard driving, high intelligence reporters driven by the paper's legacy. The Washington I know is no longer. The venerable Post, the White House East Wing, the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian, soon perhaps, the view to sacred Arlington Cemetery. For many true patriots who live in the Washington D.C. area, this is personal.
Sigh. Add to it the paved over Rose Garden and the Kennedy willow trees chopped down. Everything beautiful and honest, destroyed and/or corrupted. Good-bye, WaPo.
Depressingly spot on :(
Like a scandal in the wind…
Hello darkness, my old friend…

Holy heck, you nailed it in one simple illustration, well done!
Simply perfect.
He bought it to destroy it and us.
and get even richer by currying favor with the Demented One

"Democracy Dies in Darkness" was once a warning.
Now it is an instruction for the fascists.

What an image! It says it all.
No words needed.
Just amazing.
Such a loss.
Shameful.
I mourn.
MAGA,
Sick.
Darkness descends.
Spot on, and brilliantly depicted.
WAPO is where I first 'met' you, Michael. Since then both of us have managed to abandon the same sinking ship.
Times 2
And stinking ship.

... but power corrupts. And wealth equals power to a lot of folks. Even with the lights on.
Tragic. The Post was my hometown paper that I was so proud of. 😢
"Tragic" is a perfect word for it.
